Friends With the Fringe of Life Pt. 1

Jun 7, 2026    Ralph Mann

This powerful exploration of Matthew 9:9-13 challenges us to reconsider what it truly means to follow Jesus by examining four transformative habits that defined His earthly ministry. We discover that Jesus calls all kinds of people, hangs out with all kinds of people, saves all kinds of people, and continues doing so today. The story of Matthew the tax collector serves as a stunning reminder that Jesus doesn't check our credentials or demand we clean up our lives before He invites us to follow Him. Instead, He meets us exactly where we are, saves us in our brokenness, and then begins the transformative work of changing us from the inside out. The religious leaders were scandalized that Jesus ate with sinners, but that's precisely the point: presence doesn't mean participation. We can be around people who need Jesus without compromising our faith. In fact, we must be, because we are Plan A for sharing the gospel, and there is no Plan B. This message confronts us with an uncomfortable question: Can anyone accuse us of being friends of sinners? If Jesus was criticized for the company He kept, shouldn't we expect the same if we're truly following His example? The call is clear: we're ambassadors for Christ, making His appeal through our lives, our conversations, and our willingness to love the unlovable.
